sssInformation about CSPBA

The CSPBA aims to attract individuals who are either businessmen or professionals. Most but not all of our members are of Slovak origin. Apart from providing members with an opportunity to socialize and to network, the CSPBA has been organizing very successful annual Scholarship Balls for last 41 years. In fact, it has been a substantial purpose of our organization: to encourage and support our students in pursuing their education beyond the secondary school level.

wwwOur history

The CSPBA is very proud to be in its 44th year. For most of that time, our members have supported students of Slovak origin or those who are directly related to our members. Initially we only awarded scholarships to students who were entering their first year of undergraduate studies. Several years ago, we expanded the circle of recipients by including the CEGEP and University bound students. All of our scholarship winners receive a minimum of $1,000. Besides these, there are three special awards:

  1. The John Simkovits Award for a Canadian student with the best overall academic average ($1,200)
  2. La Maison Slovaque Award for the best graduate student ($1,100)
  3. The Slovak Government Award for the best CEGEP student ($1,100)

As of today, the CSPBA has awarded scholarships to 340 students. The combined value of all the scholarships awarded is $186,900. Application form for the CSPBA Scholarships will be available on this page in time for the next year. Your contributions to scholarships will be greatly appreciated, you will help to fulfill our noble mission. Please, make the check payable to CSPBA and mail it to the following address:

  • Jan Vandzura, 2850 Cote Vertu, #403, Ville St. Laurent, Quebec H4R 3A8
  • Josef Brody, 5795 Sir Walter Scott, #804, Côte St. Luc, Quebec, H4W 2T7

The check can be postdated, if necessary. We will send you a receipt for tax purposes.

zzz41st Annual Scholarship Ball

On Saturday, November 5th, 2005 at the Challenger Golf Club, 2525 Rue des Nations, in Ville St. Laurent, over 250 guests took part in the 40th Annual Scholarship Ball of the Canadian Slovak Professional and Business Association (CSPBA). This annual ball is a formal event with live music and dancing. The Scholarship Ball, since its inception, has always been a dignified event and the climax of the Montreal Slovak Social Calendar.
The Canadian Slovak Professional and Business Association held its 41st Annual Scholarship Ball on Saturday, November 4th, 2006, at the golf club Le Challenger, 2525 Rue des Nations in Ville St. Laurent. There were over 185 visitors at the Ball including the Ambassador of the Slovak Republic his Excellency Mr. Stanislav Opiela with his wife, the recently named Honorary Consul of the Slovak Republic in Montreal Mr. Dezider Michaletz with his wife and the General Consul of the Czech Republic Mrs. Viera Jarešová with her husband.

Cocktails, where were served excellent hors d’oeuvres and sparkling wine, started at 6:00 PM, followed by a sumptuous 5 course meal at 7:00 PM.  The dance music was as always provided by the melodic sounds of Harold Birkens’ Orchestra. At this Ball, as we do every year, our Association presented the following four scholarships:

The $1,000  CSPBA award received Mr. Ioanis Michalopoulos;
The $1,100 award of the Slovak Government received Miss Lenka Kručková;
La $1,100 Maison Slovaque award received Mr. Vladimír Mindek and
the $1,200 John Simkovits memorial award was bestowed upon Miss Jaclyn Leebosh,

who as the valedictorian thanked for the received honours.

Tickets were at $80.00, or at $100.00 per person. For each $100.00 ticket, for income tax purposes, there is a $40.00 receipt for the contribution to the Scholarship fund.

We want thank all the guests for coming to the Ball and helped to support the education of our Slovak youth.  We look forward to see you among us next year when on Saturday, November 3rd, 2007 we hold our 42nd Annual Scholarship Ball again at the golf club Le Challenger. Those who want to apply for a scholarship should follow our web-site, where we post the applications.
